MPS Allocators Roundtable with Citywire: six key themes shaping portfolio construction in 2026

18 Feb 2026

Earlier this year, Citywire brought together leading portfolio managers, including Luke Hyde-Smith, Co-Head of Multi-Asset, for a six-part MPS Allocators roundtable series exploring how model portfolio services are adapting to today’s evolving market and regulatory environment.

Across the discussions, several common themes emerged. Panelists reflected on the renewed role of real assets such as gold in navigating inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, alongside selective opportunities in areas including Japanese equities, alternatives and closed-ended funds trading at attractive discounts.

With equity-bond correlations proving less reliable, managers also highlighted the growing importance of absolute return strategies in diversifying sources of return and enhancing portfolio resilience. At the same time, participants noted continued caution around more richly valued areas of the market.

Finally, the roundtable addressed the increasing influence of tax considerations, particularly potential capital gains tax changes, on portfolio construction and rebalancing decisions within MPS frameworks.

Overall, the series highlighted how active asset allocation and thoughtful implementation can help advisers navigate an increasingly complex investment landscape with confidence.
